The Fraid Knots took a dominating 127-90 victory over the Cockpit Candies in the final bout of the Charlotte Roller Girls 2009 intra-league season. The victors held the lead after 44 of 45 jams, but despite the domination, the Cockpit Candies kept their wheels to the floor and battled until the end. The action took place on Sunday at Bojangles’ Coliseum after unscheduled facility repairs at the league’s home venue, the Grady Cole Center, forced the move.
The first period kicked off with Paige Leary a.k.a. Court’her Pounder’her and Pam Brown a.k.a. Pamela Ander-Slam, jammers for the Fraid Knots and Cockpit Candies respectively, facing off. Leary took lead jammer status and grabbed a quick one point lead. The Cockpit Candies fought back in the fifth jam, taking advantage of Fraid Knots jammer Erin Barbee a.k.a. Foxy Pound in the penalty box. Linda Sewell a.k.a. BoToxic Bruz’her, scored 14 points and took the lead for the first and subsequently only time of the bout.
Several jammer penalties by the Cockpit Candies in the first period handed the Fraid Knots an advantage they made full use of. Twenty-eight points were scored with their opponents’ jammer in the penalty box. At the end of the period, the Fraid Knots held a 65-29 lead.
The Cockpit Candies sent Megan Giacobbe a.k.a. Scarlett A. Sassin out to face Samantha Labarbera a.k.a. Drew FearMEmore to start the second period. Labarbera capitalized on a Giacobbe penalty and extended the Fraid Knots lead by 10. Sewell, Brown, Giacobbe and Robin Moates a.k.a. Optimus Fine chipped away at the Fraid Knots lead but Barbee, Labarbera and Monica Wackerhagen a.k.a. Hands on Gretel scored enough points to maintain a 96-60 lead at the close of the second period.
In the final 20 minute period, the Cockpit Candies rotated jammers Giacobbe, Brown, Sewell and Moates in an effort to overcome the 24 point deficit, but strong defensive plays by Fraid Knots blockers Ashley Broder a.k.a. Darcy Vader and Meredith Jones a.k.a. Josie Slam’Her held them back. A jammer penalty, which sent Sewell to the penalty box in the penultimate jam, allowed Wackerhagen to add 13 points to the Fraid Knots now insurmountable lead. In the final jam, Barbee scored four points and pounded the message home that the Fraid Knots were victorious.
Wackerhagen was the high scorer for the Fraid Knots with 56 points while Sewell led the way for the Cockpit Candies with 37 points.
The championship round, originally scheduled for Septmber12, has been canceled due to the continuing repair at the Grady Cole Center. The final standings for the 2009 intra-league season have the Block’em Sock’em Rollers (2-0) in first, Fraid Knots (1-1) second and Cockpit Candies (0-2) third.
The final home bout of the 2009 season will now be held on December 6 and has been designated a Fan Appreciation Night. Complete details and advance ticket sales information will be available at a later date.
