Charlotte Roller Girls Return to Action on July 19

July 19, 2009After a nine-week break, the Charlotte Roller Girls return to action on July 19 at the Grady Cole Center to kick off its 2009 intra-league championship. Competing in this first bout are Charlotte’s two original intra-league teams, the Block’em Sock’em Rollers and Cockpit Candies. These two teams faced off last year with the Block’em Sock’em Rollers taking a narrow two point victory.

During the summer, Charlotte takes a break from interleague competition in order to bring fans its intra-league championship. This championship runs from July to September and consists of three qualifying bouts followed by a title-deciding round, the final home bout of the year. This is a serious competition which allows fans the opportunity to see all of Charlotte’s players compete at home.

“It’s only fitting that the first bout of this championship be between these two teams,” said Cockpit Candies captain Pamela Ander-Slam. “The last time we battled, it went down to the wire. This year we want redemption.”

In addition to the two original teams, the Fraid Knots will also be competing in the championship. The first bout for this newly formed team is on August 9. Every season, the roster for each team is determined. The roster remains in place throughout the season but will change the following year.

“This championship is so much fun for all of us,” said Block’em Sock’em Rollers captain Puncher P. Hole. “All season, we all talk smack about who’s the best Charlotte player. Smack talking time is over. It’s on!”

The Grady Cole Center is located at 310 N. Kings Drive. Seating is limited and fans are encouraged to arrive early. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. with the bout starting at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are on sale now here for $10 or in person at The Common Market. Tickets can also be purchased at the door for $14. Access to the after party event, held at the Dilworth Neighborhood Grille 911 E. Morehead Street, is included with the purchase of a ticket.

Organized in 2006, the Charlotte Roller Girls is an all-female flat track roller derby league formed with the purpose of promoting the sport of roller derby and enriching the Charlotte community. It is a not-for-profit organization that donates its time and a portion of bout proceeds to local charitable causes. It holds its home bouts at the Grady Cole Center in Charlotte and its 2009 season runs from February through October.
