To kick off its intra-league season, the Charlotte Roller Girls will host the Intra-league Rollout Bash on July 10. This free public event begins at 9:00 p.m. and will be held at Dilworth Neighborhood Grille, located at 911 E. Morehead Street.
This event marks the official start of Charlotte’s 2009 intra-league season. The season runs from July to September and consists of three qualifying bouts followed by a championship round, the final home bout of the year. The intra-league championship is a serious competition which allows fans the opportunity to see all 40 of Charlotte’s players compete at its home venue the Grady Cole Center.
Competing in the championship rounds will be Charlotte’s two original intra-league teams, the Block’em Sock’em Rollers and Cockpit Candies and introducing its third team, the Fraid Knots.
The focus of the evening will be the official unveiling of the Fraid Knots. The team’s theme, uniforms and roster will be revealed. The Block’em Sock’em Rollers and Cockpit Candies will also be introduced. Afterwards, fans will have the opportunity to meet and take photos with their favorite players.
The first qualifying bout of the intra-league season, held on July 19, will feature the Block’em Sock’em Rollers and the Cockpit Candies. On August 9, the Block’em Sock’em Rollers battle the Fraid Knots and on August 30 the Fraid Knots take on the Cockpit Candies. The two teams with the best records will face off in the championship bout on September 12.
At each bout, doors open at 5:15 p.m. with the first whistle at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and can and be purchased in advance for $10 here or in person at the Common Market. Tickets can also be purchased at the door for $14.
Organized in 2006, the Charlotte Roller Girls is an all-female flat track roller derby league formed with the purpose of promoting the sport of roller derby and enriching the Charlotte community. It is a not-for-profit organization that donates its time and a portion of bout proceeds to local charitable causes. It holds its home bouts at the Grady Cole Center in Charlotte and its 2009 season runs from February through October.
