Charlotte Roller Girls to hold Exhibition at Lowe’s Motor Speedway

Friday, July 31st, 2009

summer_shootout_09What’s better on a summer night than roller derby? How about a roller derby exhibition bout combined with a night of racing. On August 4, the Charlotte Roller Girls will hold an exhibition bout at Lowe’s Motor Speedway during the track’s weekly Summer Shootout Series. It will mark the first time in history that the Charlotte Roller Girls will bout at the world famous speedway.

“Race cars have four wheels and roller girls skate with eight. I guess that means roller derby is double the excitement,” joked league president Cress Barnes a.k.a. Lucy Kwipment. “Racing and roller derby have a lot in common. Both turn left and the leaders try to lap the field. The fans are in for a real treat.”

Dedicated to the local community, the organization volunteers its time and contributes a portion of its home bout proceeds to local charities.

“Under our tough exteriors we have hearts of gold,” said league president Cress Barnes a.k.a Lucy Kwipment. “We take great pride in making a positive impact on the Charlotte community – our community.”

Each season, the Charlotte Roller Girls recognize one local charity as its main beneficiary. In 2009, it selected A Child’s Place, a local organization which works to erase the impact of homelessness on children and their education.

Monday, July 20th, 2009

July19On Sunday, the Charlotte Roller Girls’ 2009 intra-league season got underway at the Grady Cole Center. In the first of this four round championship, Charlotte’s two teams, the Block’em Sock’em Rollers (BSR) and Cockpit Candies (CC), faced off. The two teams battled head-to-head for three periods but in the end it was BSR who took the victory 92-67.

From the start, the players’ intensity made it apparent that this championship was serious business. BSR’s initial jammer, Rosie Cheeks, grabbed a quick four points over CC’s jammer BoToxic Bruz’her. Scoring jams by Puncher P. Hole, Pollyannarchy and Devlin Syder allowed BSR to pull out to a 15 point advantage. It was a lead BSR would never relinquish.
